Why did you choose Iowa State University?

I knew I wanted to attend a university in the Midwest, and after visiting several schools, I realized that Iowa State was the right fit for me. When I got to walk around campus, I liked that it was big enough to offer many opportunities and meet new people, but still small enough to feel like a community, where you see familiar faces walking to class. The welcoming atmosphere and strong academics made my decision an easy one.

How did you become interested in your major?

I began as a horticulture major due to my interest in plants that stemmed from my experience working on a farm throughout high school. However, due to my growing passion for medicine, which stemmed from volunteering with hospice residents and working as a CNA at a hospital, I realized that biology aligned more closely with both my interests and aspirations. I was excited for courses like anatomy and physiology, and it also opened the door for me to explore research in neurobiology.

What are your current goals following graduation?

After graduation, I plan on attending medical school.

Campus activities: I had the opportunity to represent Iowa State as a LAS Ambassador, where I represented the College of LAS. Through campus tours and recruitment events, I shared my student experience and helped prospective students envision their future here. This role strengthened my communication and leadership skills, deepened my connection to campus, and gave me a greater appreciation for the supportive community Iowa State fosters.

Research experience: Through undergraduate research at Iowa State, I gained hands-on lab experience studying retinal cells. I became proficient in techniques like immunocytochemistry and cell culturing, and later mentored new lab members. Presenting at symposiums taught me to communicate complex ideas clearly. This experience strengthened my critical thinking, adaptability, and problem-solving skills, all of which better prepared me for medical school.

Study abroad experience: During my study abroad trip to Roatán, Honduras, I got to snorkel colorful reefs and swim with dolphins. I also got to see the connection between medicine and conservation. Seeing environmental impacts on marine life showed me how ecosystem health affects human health too. Studying coral resilience and animal behavior deepened my interest in biological adaptation. This experience allowed me to make new friendships and gain insight into the role of conservation in global health.

What are a few things you love about your major and department?

What I love most about my major is the supportive community around you. My professors genuinely care about their students' success, whether it is through engaging office hours or providing mentorship. Biology offers various exciting research opportunities, and I love how accessible these opportunities are, even for first-year students. Not stepping into research earlier is my only regret! The department’s welcoming environment makes learning an exciting and hands-on experience.

How would you fill in the blank for high school students interested in your field?

“You’re going to love studying the sciences at Iowa State because ….”
Incredible hands-on opportunities and a supportive community are awaiting you! From your first year, you can join research (like I did in neuroscience or marine biology), work with professors who truly mentor you, and explore how different sciences connect (taking courses from ecology to human anatomy, and everything in between). The collaborative environment makes complex topics exciting, and there’s always someone to help, whether in office hours or in the lab. It’s the perfect place to grow your curiosity and turn it into a real work impact.

Do you have an example of how a professor or staff member has supported you at Iowa State?

During my sophomore year, I took a neurobiology course, which sparked my interest in neuroscience. Dr. Sakaguchi, one of my neurobiology professors, turned my curiosity into real experience by allowing me to work in his lab. Under his guidance, I've developed valuable research skills while exploring my passion. His mentorship showed me that Iowa State's true strength is that you are surrounded by professors who don't just teach, but actively invest in their students' growth.

My best advice for new students is . . . Get involved! I’ve made so many friends through clubs, both fun ones (like the Antique Tractor Club) and academic ones (like Pre-Medicine Club). My pre-med club opened doors for me: volunteering opportunities, advice from upperclassmen on which classes to take, and guidance for navigating Iowa State. Joining clubs is the best way to build community and find support.
