Major: Biology Minor: Psychology
Why did you choose Iowa State University?
I chose to attend ISU because of its vast opportunities in undergraduate research, and its supportive community.
How did you become interested in your major?
I chose to major in biology because I was interested in the complex systems within the body and how it relates to health. Complementing this with a minor in psychology has allowed me to better understand the behavioral and social factors that impact health and prepare me for my career in medicine.
What are your current goals following graduation?
I will be attending Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
Internship experience: I worked at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, IA as a patient care technician. My favorite part about this position was how much I learned about healthcare and being a part of a healthcare team. This position helped prepare me for my future goals and career by giving me early experience into the healthcare system and practice working with patients directly.
Campus involvement: At ISU I have been actively involved in the University Honors Program and the Cyclone Marching Band, both of which I have served in leadership roles. I have developed strong communication skills, accountability, and the ability to support and guide peers toward shared goals. These experiences have strengthened my teamwork, time management, and leadership skills that will be essential as I continue pursuing a career in medicine.
Research experience: I worked with Dr. Sakaguchi focusing on the development and differentiation of retinal progenitor cells. I especially enjoyed the process of asking complex questions and working collaboratively with students from different backgrounds. Undergraduate research has strengthened my critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will be essential to succeed in medical school.
What are a few things you love about your major and department?
One of the things I love most about my Biology major is how it challenges me to think critically. The department has created a supportive and collaborative environment, with professors who are approachable and genuinely invested in student success. I also appreciate the emphasis on hands-on learning and research, which has allowed me to apply what I learn in the classroom to real-world scientific questions.
How would you fill in the blank for high school students interested in your field?
“You’re going to love studying the sciences at Iowa State because ….”
there are endless opportunities in anything that you want to do. There are so many different ways to be involved on campus, and there is a fantastic community waiting for you to be involved with you and support you during your studies and activities.
Do you have an example of how a professor or staff member has supported you at Iowa State?
At ISU I have received support from my academic advisor who has helped me balance a demanding course load with research and extracurricular activities. During a particularly busy semester, they worked with me to adjust my schedule and prioritize my goals, while also checking in on my well-being. That guidance helped me succeed academically and taught me the importance of seeking mentorship and maintaining balance.

My best advice for new students is . . . don't be afraid to reach out! Whether it’s introducing yourself to a professor, asking a question in class, joining a club, or connecting with classmates, those small steps can open doors to meaningful opportunities and friendships. Some of the most impactful experiences I’ve had started simply because I was willing to send an email or start a conversation.
