  • BEST Peer Mentor
Hello, my name is Kara! I am a senior from Harlan, Iowa, and I am on the pre-human health track with the goal of attending medical school after graduation from Iowa State. I am unsure of which specialty I want to pursue, but family medicine and pediatrics both interest me. Along with my biology degree, I am obtaining a minor in Spanish. I had a really great experience with my peer mentors when I was a freshman and enjoyed being a part of the BEST learning community, so I was excited when I had the opportunity to continue my involvement in BEST as a peer mentor! My favorite part about being a peer mentor is helping students find out about all of the great opportunities in biology – some of which they may not even know exist! I also love helping students plan their future courses and introducing them to all that Iowa State has to offer. Aside from being a BEST peer mentor, I am the secretary of the Biological Sciences Club, the Vice President of Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society, a member of the Pre-Med club, a member of the Primate Interest Club, and an undergraduate research assistant in Dr. Corinna Most’s lab. I am also a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

New students can ask me about getting involved in the Biological Sciences Club, Pre-Med Club, Primate Interest Club, and Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society. They can also ask me anything pre-human health-related, including about the MCAT, the best courses to take to meet medical school requirements, the process of applying to medical school, and getting leadership, volunteer, and research experience to be a well-rounded applicant. I have also used Iowa State tutoring services, supplemental instruction, and Writing and Media Center services, and I would love to answer any questions regarding those resources. I am happy to help in any way that I can!
