  • BEST Peer Mentor
I am a senior from Wauconda, Illinois who is extremely passionate about teaching others and wants to become a professor one day. I spent half of my undergraduate career with a focus in microbiology, thinking I wanted to pursue that route in graduate school. I still like microbes, but I am starting to become more interested in ecology/animals. It’s honestly completely normal to not be sure as to what exactly you want to do, even as a senior. I do know one thing, though, and it’s that I absolutely love biology. It is so integrated in everything we do and there are so many opportunities. I have been a peer mentor since Fall 2019 and it has been an extremely rewarding experience. I became a peer mentor for the teaching aspect and because I struggled a lot my first year of college. I was homesick, uncomfortable, stressed, and felt so lost. By becoming a mentor, I can be a resource or guide to those experiencing the exact same feelings I was. My favorite thing about being a mentor is the events and getting to know my mentees. It makes me happy when I am able to build a bond with my mentees and help them through this transition of life. I love the community we have here in BEST and I know you will too! In addition to being a mentor, I am involved in research. I am also in Alpha Sigma Kappa, where I serve as the Vice President of Risk Management. I was able to study abroad in Cork, Ireland in the spring of 2020, and it really changed my life. I know a lot of bio majors do not think study abroad is possible, but it absolutely is! In the past, I have been a tutor and was involved in the committee for my dorm floor. Apart from all of that, I love Iowa State’s campus and one of my favorite places is the workspace in the MU!
