Scholarships Available to Biology Students
Sophomore Success Scholarship
Intended as a reward for academically successful and involved 2nd Year
Iowa State Biology majors.
Award:
$1,000 for academic year 2009-2010
Eligibility:
-At least 45 ISU credits
-No more than 89 total college credits
-Minimum ISU GPA of 3.0
Application:
-Due February 16, 2009
-Submit application materials to 103 Bessey Hall
-Must include:
- a resume
- an unofficial ISU transcript
- a letter describing career goals in biology as well as university-level participation in experience relating to career goals (research jobs or independent study experience, activity in student clubs, activity in learning communities, field trip course experience, membership in the Honors Program, leadership roles, etc.
Scholarship in Ecology, Evolutionary and Environmental Biology
Annual scholarship for an undergraduate student actively pursuing their education and shows promise for going on to graduate study in ecology, evolutionary or environmental biology.
Award:
$400 for academic year 2009-2010
Eligibility:
-Junior or Senior class standing in a major
administered by the EEOB department
-Minimum ISU GPA of 3.0
Application:

-Must include:
- a resume
- an unofficial ISU transcript
- a letter of recommendation from an ISU faculty member
This award will be recognized at the Biology and Genetics Recognition and Reception on March 4, 2009.
Darlene and Melvin Larsen Genetics, Development and Cell Biology Scholarship
Purpose to reward academic achievement.
Award:
-$1,000 award per year for a maximum of four years
Eligibility:
-Undergraduate majoring in genetics, development, and cell biology (all majors supported by GDCB)
-Student with 3.0 GPA or higher
-Preference given to students with demonstrated leadership skills
-Preference given to students with financial need

Diane Marie Heimbuch Scholarship
Purpose to reward academic achievement.
Award:
-$1,000 award per year for a maximum of three years
Eligibility:
-Zoology, Biology and Genetics majors may apply, but preference is given to Zoology students
-Student must be a sophomore in standing
-Minimum 3.0 GPA
-Registered full time
-Iowa resident
-Preference given to those who have received this scholarship in the past

Fung Internship in the Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology
Summer internships to provide opportunities for fulltime hands-on research experiences for ISU undergraduate students working in genetics research.
Award:

Eight-week internship with stipend of $3,500
Eligibility:

Participants are expected to work 40 hours per week and enrollment in summer courses is discouraged. Open to all majors.

ISU IMSEP CESMEE Scholarship Opportunities
Several new scholarships are available for the Summer (2009) semester through IMSEP (Iowa Math Science Education Partnership, http://www.iowamathscience.org/) . The ISU IMSEP Scholarships are administered through the ISU Center for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education (CESMEE).
The scholarships are for math and science majors who are in the ISU pre-service teacher program. This includes students in the M.A.T. program in science education and students in math licensure M. Ed. program. The deadline for submitting applications is March 2, 2009 for the Summer Sessions. Students who fit the criteria and are interested in applying for a scholarship can download the information and submit an on-line application form at http://hs.iastate.edu/imsep. |
