Biology is found everywhere and surrounds us at all times. Study in the biological sciences covers many realms, from the diversity of life on the planet and the interactions between species to the most intricate and specific details of cellular structure or the passing of genetic material from one generation to the next.

Iowa State University is a major center for research and education in the biological sciences. Here students have the opportunity to learn from and interact with some of the nation’s leaders in research and teaching as well as participate in many innovative programs. The Biology Major is jointly administered by the Departments of Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology (EEOB) and Genetics, Development and Cellular Biology (GDCB). Faculty from these departments teach and mentor biology students in the diverse specialties within biology. The major prepares students for careers in research, human medicine, veterinary medicine, teaching, as well as government or industrial employment in health and environmental professions.

To support our outstanding academic program we have many opportunities for our students to take advantage of. Our freshman learning community, BEST, is one of the oldest and most active learning communities on the ISU campus. Student organizations, such as The Biological Sciences Club, The Marine Biology Club and many pre-professional clubs, provide an opportunity to get to know other students interested in the same areas of the biological sciences. The Biology Program also provides both International and North American field trip courses and strongly supports the use of study abroad to gain a global perspective.

If you want to use your college career to really increase your understanding of the world you live in and gain valuable experiences at the same time, then come join us in Biology at Iowa State University.
